Robert D. Ramirez: United Way giving: There is strength in unity
We rise by lifting others.” It’s a powerful thought — one that accurately depicts the potential impact of giving, be it time, money or muscle. In Tucson, we’re fortunate so many residents live by that mantra. We are surrounded by individuals who embrace giving as part of our community culture. As 2015-2016 Campaign Chair for the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, I am counting on that giving spirit to help make 2015 the most successful United Way Community Campaign ever.
As our local United Way enters a new season of charitable giving, it’s vital to remember why it is so important to support this communitywide effort. Unfortunately, poverty hits close to home. Tucson residents who struggle with poverty are among the poorest in the country. Earlier this year, Tucson was ranked as the fifth poorest city in America, based on these stark statistics: 35 percent of residents earn less than $25,000 each year; just 25 percent of residents hold a bachelor’s degree; and only 3 percent of residents earn an annual income greater than $150,000.
