United Way-supported wellness programs save money, lives

The cost of poor health is high in our community. Live Well Northwest Florida estimates that unhealthy weight costs local employers about $575 per person in lost productivity, absenteeism and direct medical expenses. Across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, these costs swell to $85 million in annual expenses. Add in the negative impacts of tobacco use that costs employers an average of $5,600 per smoker, and employers lose another $490 million annually.

Healthy behaviors can save our community millions, and wellness programs are reported to have a $5.81 to $1 savings to cost ratio.
